BEHIND ME IN THE RED SHIRTS IS THE MAYPORT COASTAL SCIENCES ROBOTICS CLUB, AND THEY ARE HERE TO SHARE SOME BIG NEWS ABOUT A NOT JUST LOCAL, NOT A STATE, NOT A NATIONAL, BUT AN INTERNATIONAL AWARD THAT THEY WON.

AND THIS IS PARTICULARLY REWARDING BECAUSE THIS IS THE FRUITS OF THE CITY OF ATLANTIC BEACH GRANT THROUGH THE ARTS, RECREATION AND CULTURE COMMITTEE AND I'D LIKE TO FIRST INTRODUCE THE PRINCIPAL IS HERE, THE NEW PRINCIPAL, AARON [INAUDIBLE] AND TODD CARAWAY, THE ADULT WHO LEADS THIS GROUP, IS GOING TO MAKE A PRESENTATION TO THE COMMISSION.

MAYPORT COASTAL SCIENCE MIDDLE SCHOOL IS AN ABSOLUTE GEM.

YES. MY SON'S A SEVENTH GRADER, SO HE'S NOT HERE.

HE'S ON VACATION, SO HE'S NOT HERE TONIGHT.

BUT WE ABSOLUTELY LOVE WHAT WE THE EDUCATION WE'VE BEEN GETTING THERE AND IT'S NOT JUST THE KIND OF THE A LEVEL EDUCATION.

IT'S THE OPPORTUNITIES AS WELL.

SO THE ROBOTICS CLUB IS AN ANCILLARY SCHOOL GROUP WHERE WE MEET EVERY TUESDAY EVERY DAY, EVERY TUESDAY FOR TWO HOURS.

THIS IS AFTER SCHOOL MEET EVERY SATURDAY FROM NINE TILL NOON, FROM SEPTEMBER UP UNTIL MAY.

SO IT'S OVER 2000 HOURS THAT THESE KIDS DEDICATE TO THIS PROGRAM AND WHAT IT IS BASICALLY A STEM PROGRAM.

SO THE SCIENCE TECHNOLOGY BUILDING AN UNDERWATER ROBOT ENTER STAGE LEFT.

SO GO AHEAD AND LOOK THIS UP SO THEY CAN SEE IT IF YOU DON'T MIND JUST GOING TO WALK RUN.

SO IT'S A REMOTE OPERATED VEHICLE.

BASICALLY SEAPERCH, WHICH IS A INTERNATIONAL ORGANIZATION HAS A COMPETITION WHERE WE BASICALLY BUILD THIS USING THE SCIENTIFIC METHODS USING BASICALLY 3D DESIGN BASICALLY ENGINEERING IT AND GOING THROUGH THE ENGINEERING PROCESS AND THEN COMPETING WITH IT UNDERWATER.

SO THERE'S A I CAN'T BRING IT IN, BUT BASICALLY A FIVE FOOT DEEP TARGET UNDERWATER AND THERE'S TWO COURSES AND THEY BASICALLY ARE REMOTELY OPERATED AND THESE BASICALLY THERE'S 14 KIDS TOTAL.

SO 3 TEAMS BASICALLY ONE THEY BEAT THE WORLD.

SO WE'VE GOT THE 6TH GRADERS WHO WON THE MIDDLE SCHOOL INTERNATIONAL FIRST PLACE CLASS AND WE HAVE THE SEVENTH GRADERS WHO WON THE SIMILAR AWARD FOR THE OPEN CLASS, WHICH WAS AGAINST HIGH SCHOOLERS AS WELL.

LAST YEAR WE ALSO WON A CHAMPIONSHIP THE YEAR BEFORE.

WE HAVE AS WELL. SO IT'S BEEN SEVERAL YEARS COMING.

SO THE PROGRAM'S BEEN AROUND, I THINK 6 OR 7 YEARS.

AGAIN, REMEMBER MIDDLE SCHOOL, YOU CYCLE THROUGH EVERY THREE.

SO IT'S A DIFFERENT GROUP OF KIDS, A DIFFERENT GROUP OF PARENTS EVERY COUPLE OF YEARS.

BUT THEY'VE REALLY DONE AN OUTSTANDING JOB.

THE FINANCIAL SUPPORT FROM YOU IS CRITICAL TO IT.

THERE IS TRAVEL INVOLVED.

THERE ARE 3D PRINTERS, THERE ARE EQUIPMENT THOSE TYPES OF THINGS.

SO WE DO FUNDRAISERS.

I THINK WE DID A PRETTY GOOD JOB THIS YEAR, BUT YOU GUYS WERE AN INTEGRAL PIECE TO THAT AS WELL.

SO WE DO APPRECIATE THAT AND THEN WE'VE ALSO BEEN ABLE TO WIN THE AWARDS THIS YEAR, NOT JUST THE TWO BIG AWARDS.

SO THE BEST TECHNICAL REPORT, THE BEST MISSION COURSE TIME, THERE'S DIFFERENT LEVELS OF IT AND THEN TECHNICAL REPORT FOR ONE OF THE TEAMS. KIND OF AN INTERESTING SIDE NOTE.

THE GROUP ITSELF REACHED OUT TO US AND SAID HEY, AS THE TOP SCORING TECHNICAL REPORT, WHICH IS ABOUT A ABOUT TEN PAGE REPORT LET ME GET THE NAME RIGHT.

THE AMERICAN SOCIETY OF NAVAL ENGINEERS ASKED US TO HAVE IT PUBLISHED.

SO THE KIDS ARE GOING TO ACTUALLY GET A PUBLISHING CREDIT.

THERE'S NOT MUCH AS FAR AS MONEY THERE, BUT AS FAR AS THEY'LL HAVE A CHANCE TO GET THAT ACKNOWLEDGMENT AND SO WE'RE CONSTANTLY LEARNING NEW THINGS, NEW EXPERIENCES.

IT'S THE ACADEMIC CURRICULUM IN THE SCHOOL THAT'S FANTASTIC.

BUT THIS IS WHAT KIND OF BRINGS IT TO LIFE.

THIS IS WHAT'S GOING TO MAKE TOMORROW'S ENGINEERS.

THIS IS WHAT'S GOING TO HAVE THEM HOPEFULLY STAY IN THE COMMUNITY, RETURN AFTER HIGH SCHOOL TO COLLEGE, THOSE TYPES OF THINGS AND WE JUST WANT TO COME UP AND SAY THANK YOU.

JUST SIMPLE AS THAT.

THE TEAM HAS, I THINK, A PRETTY FUN TIME DOING IT.

WE DO HAVE TO LURE THEM SOMETIMES WITH DONUTS ON SATURDAY BUT USUALLY GET SOME GOING.

BUT THEN OTHER THAN THAT, IT'S A LONG SEASON, BUT IT'S A VERY REWARDING AS WELL AND AGAIN WINNING THEY ARE LEARNING.

IT'S NOT EVERYTHING.

CERTAINLY IT'S NICE WHEN YOU PUT IN ALL THAT EFFORT AND YOU DO HAVE SUCCESS AT THE END.

THREE POINTS, I URGE YOU TO REMEMBER THE TEN PLUS PUBLIC COMMENTS AT THE FORMER AT A FORMER CITY COMMISSION MEETING WHO ENTHUSIASTICALLY SUPPORTS THIS AMENDMENT TO THE CITY CHARTER.

BUT EVERY TIME WE PAVE, WE'RE JUST TAKING OFF THE OLD PAVEMENT, PUTTING ON NEW PAVEMENT RATHER THAN TRYING TO GET THE SKINNIER STREETS A LITTLE BIT WIDER SO THAT A COUPLE OF CARS CAN PASS AT THE SAME TIME WITH SOME OUT, SOMEBODY HAVING TO PULL INTO A DRIVEWAY.

I DON'T KNOW WHY WE'RE NOT TRYING TO DO THINGS BETTER.

YOU KNOW, THE BUDGETS ALWAYS HAVE ENOUGH MONEY.

YOU KNOW, IF CERTAIN STREETS NEED TO BE WIDENED A FOOT ON EITHER SIDE TO MAKE IT A STANDARD 18 FOOT STREET IN OLD ATLANTIC BEACH, WHY NOT? YOU KNOW, WE ALWAYS FIND THE MONEY.
